## What Is the Entourage Effect? The entourage effect is a proposed mechanism by which the many compounds in the cannabis plant — cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids and other phytochemicals — work together synergistically to produce effects that are greater than the sum of their parts. First articulated by Israeli researchers Raphael Mechoulam and Shimon Ben-Shabat in 1998, the concept has since gained significant traction in the scientific and clinical communities. ## Cannabinoids and Terpenes Working Together While THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) are the most well-known cannabinoids, the plant contains over 100 different cannabinoids, each interacting with the body's endocannabinoid system in distinct ways. Terpenes — the aromatic compounds responsible for cannabis's distinctive smell — are not merely fragrant. Compounds like myrcene, limonene and linalool have been shown to influence receptor activity and modulate the effects of cannabinoids. ## Clinical Implications For prescribers and formulators working with medical cannabis, the entourage effect underscores the importance of full-spectrum or broad-spectrum products over isolated single compounds. The ratio and quality of the terpene profile matters as much as the cannabinoid concentration. At Verdant Access, our Colombian producer partners cultivate with terpene preservation as a primary goal — maintaining altitude, humidity and light conditions that favour robust aromatic expression.
